They are strong and tough giving the mechanic the extra strength needed to get out old hardened packing. The grooves on the handle line up so that you get the maximum leverage from your wrist and thumb. The complex angles of the tool will help give proper penetration around the shaft and into the packing.
The Bruno was designed by a pump and valve mechanic working in a nuclear power plant. He had the same problems as you have every day.
